As old as the dinosaurs — almost
The earliest redwoods showed up on Earth shortly after the dinosaurs—and before flowers, birds, spiders... and, of course, humans. Redwoods have been around for about 240 million years, compared to about 200,000 years for “modern” humans.

Redwood Plank House
Traditional homes of the region's American Indians usually were constructed of planks split from fallen redwoods. These houses were built over pits dug beneath the building, with the space between the pit and the walls forming a natural bench. A house was understood to be a living being. The redwood that formed its planks was itself the body of one of the Spirit Beings. Spirit Beings were believed to be a divine race who existed before humans in the redwood region and who taught people the proper way to live here.

Lights. Cameras. ACTION
Redwood National and States Park has been a popular location for many films. The Endor scenes for Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi were filmed in the Tall Trees Redwood Grove in the northern part of Humboldt County. Some scenes from The Lost World: Jurassic Park along with the movie Outbreak were filmed near Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The park was also used to represent Jurassic forest of Colorado in Walking with Dinosaurs in Time of the Titans and in Dinosaurs Alive.

In and Out
The famous drive-through tree is located in Redwood National and State Park. The Wawona Tree used to be a giant sequoia in Yosemite National Park when it fell over in 1969 due to heavy snowfall. There are three redwood drive-through trees on the coast, Klamath Tour Thru Tree, Myers Flat Shrine Tree, and Leggett Chandelier Tree. Since the trees are all private businesses a small fee is charged. |
